Happy New Year to all! We hope you had a safe, meaningful, and enjoyable holiday season, and that getting back to the usual grind hasn’t been too arduous.
Here at The Editing Company, we enjoyed a “Holiday Adventure” that took us to Ben McNally Books on Bay Street for an afternoon of browsing and book shopping, followed by an early dinner at The Gabardine: Fine Grub and Libations Restaurant. We also cut out early on New Year’s Eve and celebrated the year ahead with few glasses of chilled Prosecco.
We are back into our regular schedule and picking up our usual editorial steam. Give us a call with your proofreading, editing, indexing, formatting, or consultation projects. We look forward to editing with you in the weeks and months ahead.
A New Resource for Authors
As a new year’s gift, we completed the writing and production of our second eBook: The Author’s Guide to the Pre-Publishing Editing Process. This well-written, comprehensive guide walks you through those next essential steps you need to take between completing your manuscript and finding a publisher, such as:
- the different types of editing your manuscript may need
- how to find a good editor
- how to determine your target audience
- managing your expectations
- building a good author–relationship
- deciding on self-publishing or traditional publishing
- planning for the financial costs
- and more!
If you are new to the editing process, this guide will demystify the process and give you the information you need to successfully prepare your project for publication. If you’re an experienced author, this guide provides a quick overview and then some!

New Academic Copy Editing Projects
Academic Journal Editing
Canadian Journal of Education 38:1 is now in editing and is slated for publication in March 2015.
We’ve edited a number of journal articles for our academic clients, which include a series of academic articles on reality television and documentaries; the struggle facing Ethiopian and Eritrean youth as they shape their sense of identity in the diaspora; and an economic analysis of value capture theory.
Academic Book Manuscripts
We have completed the copy editing of Grey Owl: The Writer and the Myths (U of Manitoba, 2015); We Were Called Greenies: Holocaust Survivors in Postwar Canada (U of Manitoba, 2015); Aboriginal Inclusion in Canada’s Labour Market (U of Manitoba, 2015); Outsiders Still: Why Women Journalists Love – and Leave – Their Newspaper Careers (UTP, 2015); Allied Power: Mobilizing Hydro-electricity during the Second World War (UTP, 2015); and The Myth of the Born Criminal (UTP, 2015).
We have started copy editing Indigenous Men and Masculinities (U of Manitoba Press, 2015).
Substantive Editing
We have completed the substantive editing of an anthology commemorating the 30th anniversary of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and how it has shaped (or not) press freedoms. Plus, we continue our work with an author on the substantive editing of her manuscript that explores the world of the sideshow in Canada.
Non-Fiction Book Editing
Explore St. Mark’s Coptic Museum: An Illustrated Introduction by Helene Moussa, Volunteer Museum Curator, has been edited and is now in production. It is slated for publication in March 2015. Visit the Museum’s website.
Business Copy Editing & Proofreading
We continue to proof small projects for financial and marketing clients, as well as editing business communications and various reports for professional executives. We are also editing a policy paper for a local university, and we are in discussions with a Canadian outerwear company that has approached us to proofread catalogue materials.
Business Indexing
We are soon to begin the indexing of a resource guide for artists who are developing their careers and building financial independence.
Copy Editing & Proofreading Magazines
City Life’s Jan/Feb issue is underway.
Self-Publishing Book Editing Projects
We are in discussions with a few new self-publishing authors and may be working on a few new projects in the coming weeks. We are pleased that, after two years of editing and revising, we are in the final stages of completing our client’s memoir that details his escape to London from Germany during the Second World War and recounts his professional career that took him around the world.
